Cheese Rock Hike

One of the most popular hikes in the Teanaway Community Forest, the Cheese Rock Trail is an easy favorite for locals and visitors alike—and it’s just a short drive past the Teanaway Country Store.

This is a year-round hike that offers big rewards for a relatively modest effort. Today’s hike was a great reminder of why it’s so loved: clear trails, fresh air, and no special equipment needed. In deeper winter conditions, snowshoes or ice spikes can be helpful, but on many days the trail is perfectly manageable as-is.

Trail Details at a Glance

  • Distance: 3.2 miles round trip

  • Elevation Gain: 410 feet

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Trail Type: Out-and-back with two route options

There are two main ways up, both well marked thanks to new signage installed last year by the Community Forest and partner organizations:

  • The “back way” follows a wider forest service road with a more gradual ascent.

  • The “face” climbs more directly up the steeper sandstone for those looking for a quicker workout.

Whichever route you choose, the payoff is spectacular.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

At the top, hikers are rewarded with stunning views of the Stuart Range and, of course, the trail’s namesake—a massive sandstone formation that truly does resemble a giant slice of Swiss cheese. It’s a classic Teanaway view and a great reminder of what makes this area so special.

Parking & Passes

A Discover Pass is required for parking at the trailhead. We sell day and annual passes right here at the Teanaway Country Store, making it easy to grab one before you head out.

Make a Day (or Weekend) of It

Just 90 minutes from Seattle, Cheese Rock is a popular day-trip destination. If you want to extend your stay:

  • Teanaway Campground is open about nine months of the year

  • 29 Pines Campground, about five miles away, is open year-round

  • There are also several Airbnb options nearby, many available year-round

Whether you’re visiting for the views, the hike, or a quiet day in the valley, Cheese Rock is a perfect introduction to the Teanaway—and a great excuse to stop by the store before or after your adventure, pick up a snack, treat or a free cup of coffee!

See you on the trail.
